Felix aka Fat BoySo about a month before my surgery, I had a bad GERD episode, what is commonly referred to as globus hystericus (my accupuncturist said in Chinese medicine they call it plum pitt syndrome). Anyway, it feels like there is a lump in my throat or food stuck in my throat, or like someone is choking me like when my cat felix sits on my throat. It makes me tired and cranky. It was of course understandable that the anxiety of the upcoming surgery was the cause of my episode. But now, 12 weeks post surgery, the big bad lump is back. I suppose I got too lax about what I was eating. I had some friend fish last weekend when we drove up to Oxnard to visit some friends. Fish and chips just sounded good, although I had the mashed potatoes. And I also ate a burger and fries (not on the same day). And on New Year's day I had French toast at Kate Mantalini's. I guess that's what I get for getting a little excited about being able to eat more foods. So its back to mashed potatoes and bananas which seems to help with the GERD. Ughhhh!!! So frustrating.

Hey Mary,
A friend of mine has this. Is it something that ever goes away totally? I mean do you have to watch your diet etc forever???
My friend is a very high anxiety person, and has a lot of stress in her life which I'm sure totally adds to why she has this, but hers seems to never really go away now.

Hi Brandy, thanks for your note. In my case, it comes and goes, usually coinciding with a high stress situation, like right before the surgery. I also suffer from panic attacks, usually after falling asleep. What does your friend do to cope?

Actually I don't know if she does anything? I get the sense that she is not really clear on exactly what it is or what causes it. Like I said she has a lot of stress though. Right about the time all of this started her 39 year old daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer and has had to have a full masectomy, and chemo. Her son is an alcoholic, who is constantly changing jobs and girlfriends. Prior to that he was married. His wife and her mother were hit by a bus in Seattle. The mom was killed and his wife lost her memory and doesn't remember him, AND this was all while she was 8 months pregnant with their son. She had the baby while recovering in the hospital but her family has a lot of money So he and she are constantly in battle over the custody of their son, and my friend whose husband is an attorney have been paying a lot of money to help him in the court procedings.
This is really just the tip of the iceberg with her, it is always something. I personally believe she is one of those people that thrive on drama, as something is always going wrong with her or her family. I think she unconsciously draws it to herself and things don't feel normal unless they are a bit upside down for her.
Anyway..I think her globus had gone away, or gone down, and when I saw her the other day she was saying it was back. So....it is definitely a reoccuring thing with her also.

I'm a total pro-active junkie with regard to just about everything. So when I have any kind of condition, I spend hours reading about it, etc. For my surgery I had pre-surgery hypnosis, LMD, accupuncture and even chiropractic treatment (no bone cracking though). So right now I am eating a lot of potatos and bananas and DGL (which is all supposed to be good for the stomach lining) and also some herbs my accupuncturist gave me that are supposed to be specifically for Globus. I'm sorry to hear about your friend's bad luck, sounds like she has had more than her fair share. I try to keep the drama out of my life, or to a bare minimum, realizing of course that I can't control my cirumstances. I guess what is important is how we deal with things. I keep a journal which helps to put things into perspective. Living in So Cal I have also participating in a variety of self-help "movements" (for lack of a better word). Glad to hear you aren't into analyzing people, I never did see that help. But having someone to talk to, someone who can listen and respond objectively, now, that's a gift! I think I handle things pretty well but obviously my body is letting me know that I'm not paying attention to something . . . Oh well, I have the day off, saw a great movie (The Queen) and am going to yoga in a bit, so life is good. Happy MKJ day to you. Mary
